A client approached to ask if we could achieve uniform illumination levels as well as efficient collection from a small array of deep UV (280nm) LEDs and confine the output to an exit cone of 6 degrees.  Since this is well below the transmission capability of all but a very few specialty glasses, it was apparent that it would require some special materials and fabrication techniques as well as careful mounting of the lightpipe to avoid Total Internal Reflection (TIR) losses.

 

The project was very successful and a full complement of tapered precision lightpipes were built and integrated with the client’s optics.
