Opto-Mechanical Design

While barrel cams are commonly used to accomplish zoom group movement as well as focus movement, these devices often involve tolerances that are difficult to attain in limited volumes at reasonable prices. There are times when a flexure type movement is a better alternative since the system allows axial movement over a limited range while maintaining centration accuracy. This type of system is ideal for remote control applications, using precision stepper motors to control the motion forward and aft as well as aperture setting.

SMA successfully designed and built a precision all-glass flexure- suspended lens, equipped with tiny stepper motors for a remote control application.
