SMA possesses the experience and knowledge to assemble critical lens systems as well as higher-level optical systems. SMA has developed techniques that enable mid-to-high-volume assembly while maintaining extremely tight centration and spacing. In extreme cases, active alignment techniques can often be combined with specific tooling to enable control of centering errors to single microns.
Assembly of precision optics often requires positioning within the micron range. Most often this is determined through the careful design of the interface between lens elements and barrel seats. Sometimes the designer utilizes the contact between adjacent elements to provide proper air spacing, centering and tilt control. Ensuring that critical data surfaces are properly positioned requires a combination of knowledge about optical stack-ups and experience assembling precision optics.
